History

Founded in 1969, the European Microwave Conference (EuMC) is the most important microwave event in Europe. It was first run on a two-year basis. The event became annual in 1974. With the help of a professional organizer, it became associated with an exhibition of microwave equipment.

Since the very first EuMC the local committee has been helped in establishing a high-standard international conference by colleagues from all over Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe, as well as some from the U.S. In 1973-1974 it was decided to move toward a more organized structure with:
  • A Management Committee (MC), composed of about fifteen members representing each a European country or group of countries, with a 3-year period of office, operating under written constitution and rules of procedure
  • A Technical Programme Committee (TPC), composed of about eighteen local and European experts, with an equal distribution
  • And a large paper review board for submitted papers - already seventy-five experts in 1974 - operating on a written basis
The founders of the EuMC series were very wise indeed. They based the Conference series on a strong European representation, already including a significant representation of Central and Eastern Europe in 1969. Two characteristics - broad European representation, and appointment of the members by external institutions – have probably been the key for success of the EuMC, which is still very active today after more than 30 years. In 1997, the MC included a member appointed by the IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle-East, Africa).

In 1995, during the Bologna EuMC, there were discussions within the MC on how to improve EuMC. An Adhoc Committee was formed with F.M. Landstorfer (Chair), A. Madjar, A. Räisänen, and A. Vander Vorst, which forwarded proposals to the MC. These were approved in Prague, April 1996. The MC created a six-member Steering Committee (StC) to move toward a greater management efficiency, with the members of the StC becoming members of the MC as well. Simultaneously, it appointed 5 members of this new StC, who were: L.P. Ligthart, The Netherlands, A. Madjar, Israel, H. Meinel, Germany, F. Myers, United Kingdom, and R. Sorrentino, Italy. R.H. Jansen was appointed a little later by the IEEE-MTT Society. The first meeting of the new StC occurred in London, June 29, 1996, and R. Sorrentino was elected Chairman.

Following this decision, the EuMCs were fortunate enough to benefit from a number of distinguished and devoted colleagues.

The 1997 StC comprised: R. Sorrentino (Chair), Italy, R.H. Jansen (appointed by IEEE MTT-S), Germany, L.P. Ligthart, The Netherlands, A. Madjar, Israel, H. Meinel, Germany, S.J. Nightingale, United Kingdom.

The European Microwave Association (EuMA) was created in 1998 by the Founder members:
L.P. Ligthart, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
A. Madjar, Haifa, Israel
H. Meinel, Daimler-Benz, Germany
S.J. Nightingale, ERA Technology, United Kingdom
R. Sorrentino, University of Perugia, Italy
A. Vander Vorst, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium

who formed the first Board of Directors (BoD) of the EuMA, succeeding to the StC, and are legally lifetime members of the General Assembly (GA), succeeding to the MC.
Since then, there has been renewal among the members of the BoD of EuMA:
A. Vander Vorst, Belgium, replaced R.H. Jansen in 1998
J.-L. Cazaux, France, replaced A. Madjar in 1999
P. Russer, Germany, replaced S. Nightingale in 2000
C.M. Snowden, United Kingdom, replaced H. Meinel in 2001
P.-A. Rolland, France, replaced J.-L. Cazaux in 2002
H. Daembkes, Germany, replaced P. Russer in 2004
A. Räisänen, Finland, was elected in 2006
P. Russer replaced H. Daembkes in 2007
H. Daembkes was elected as Industry Representative in 2007
R. Ranson replaced C.M. Snowden in 2008
A. Yarovoy replaced L. Ligthart in 2008
