The Tom Brazil Fellowship Award is an Essay Competition open to all students enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. or graduate degree programme in microwave electronics.
A two-stage approach is taken to select the Tom Brazil Fellowship Award winners. Interested authors are requested to submit a four-page abstract on His/Her view on
“Microwaves in supporting global challenges”
using one of the European Microwave Integrated Circuit (EuMIC) conference topics. The emphasis is on creative and original ideas and suggestions on how future microwave-related research work can best be directed toward fulfilling actual and forthcoming global challenges.
The students are requested to describe what kind of future microwave activities would be essential and why. These abstracts have to be submitted to the EuMIC conference within the standard paper submission process. The best abstracts are summarized in a shortlist during the paper reviewing process. Only these authors are requested to provide an extended version of their contribution with a maximum of 4000 words or max. of 12 pages.
To select the award-winning contribution, the full essays are reviewed again. Additionally, the authors are requested to pitch their topic to the students participating in the European Microwave Week (EuMW) doctoral school. The winning article is then selected based on the quality of the pitch talk and the outcome of the essay reviewing process.
The shortlisted authors are presented in the framework of a EuMIC plenary session, and the winning essays are announced. The best essay wins a prize of €2,500. For second and third place, prizes of €1,500 and €1,000 are granted.
The winning contribution is proposed to the IEEE Microwave Magazine for publication. Hence, the winning student is requested to adapt the essay for the presentation in this magazine. All awarded essays over the years are summarized below.
